From 1947 to the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the United States and Russia were locked in a battle of technological supremacy that threatened to end the world if either side decided to fire the first shot.
But while the United States enjoyed a period of relative prosperity at home during the Cold War, (other than enduring nuclear drills at school), Soviet Russia and its citizens struggled in relative poverty.
